Where to? Where? — two-way prepositions
The most important lesson of this unit. Nine prepositions switch case. A destination — a change of place — answers Wohin? and takes the Akkusativ: Ich gehe in die Stadt. A location answers Wo? and takes the Dativ, even when you move around inside it: Ich bin in der Stadt. Ich gehe im Park spazieren.

| Wohin? → Akkusativ | Wo? → Dativ |
|---|---|
| Ich gehe in die Stadt. | Ich bin in der Stadt. |
| Wir fahren an den See. | Wir sind am See. |
| Sie geht auf den Markt. | Sie ist auf dem Markt. |
Tip
The nine two-way prepositions: in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen. Ask yourself: a destination, a change of place (Wohin?) — or a location (Wo?)? Movement alone doesn't decide: Ich gehe im Park spazieren.
