kein or nicht?

The negation pattern from Unit 3: kein is the usual, neutral way to negate a noun with ein or no article (kein Auto, keinen Kaffee); it declines like ein. nicht negates verbs, adjectives and the rest — and can single out one element for contrast (nicht Kaffee, sondern Tee).
