Comparative & superlative

A comparative often adds -er: schnell → schneller. Predicative and adverbial superlatives commonly use am plus the adjective with -sten or -esten: am schnellsten, am ältesten. Many short adjectives with a, o or u take an umlaut, but others do not: alt → älter; groß → größer; laut → lauter. Learn the irregular forms in the table.

Comparative & superlative

Tip

For the ordinary adjective comparisons practiced here, use the comparative form: schöner, not mehr schön. Learn irregular forms such as besser separately.
