Separable verb + modal verb

With a modal verb (müssen, können, wollen …) the separable verb stays in one piece: the full infinitive closes the sentence. Ich muss früh aufstehen. Ich kann heute nicht mitkommen. In everyday speech the infinitive is sometimes dropped when it is obvious: Ich kann heute nicht mit.

Tip

In a statement the modal verb is in position 2; the whole infinitive — prefix reattached — closes the sentence.
