Separable verbs: aufstehen & co.
German loves verbs with a prefix. In a simple present-tense main-clause statement, the prefix separates and closes the bracket, while the finite verb is in position 2:
- aufstehen → Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.
- anrufen → Ich rufe Sie morgen an.
That is the neutral order, and the one to write. Your whole day runs on these verbs, so make the pattern automatic.

| Infinitiv | Beispiel |
|---|---|
| aufstehen | Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf. |
| anrufen | Ich rufe Sie morgen an. |
| einkaufen | Ich kaufe samstags ein. |
| fernsehen | Abends sehe ich fern. |
| mitkommen | Kommst du mit? |
Tip
The prefix carries the meaning: stehen = to stand, aufstehen = to get up. In the neutral sentence it waits at the end: Ich stehe jeden Tag um 7 Uhr auf.
