Where does nicht go?

To negate the whole sentence, nicht moves toward the end: after the object (Ich kaufe die Schuhe nicht), but before adjectives and infinitives (Ich kann heute nicht kommen). In front of one element it negates just that, for a contrast: Ich kaufe nicht die Schuhe, sondern die Stiefel.
