kein or nicht?
Two ways to say no.
- kein is the usual, neutral way to negate a noun that has ein or no article: Ich habe kein Auto.
- nicht negates the verb or the whole sentence, adjectives, and nouns with a definite article: Ich koche heute nicht. Die Suppe ist nicht warm.
nicht can also stand in front of one element to contrast it: Ich esse nicht Fleisch, sondern Fisch.

| Negation | Beispiel |
|---|---|
| kein + Nomen (ein / ohne Artikel) | Ich habe kein Auto. Ich trinke keinen Kaffee. |
| nicht + Verb | Ich koche heute nicht. |
| nicht + Adjektiv | Die Suppe ist nicht warm. |
| nicht + bestimmter Artikel | Ich nehme den Fisch nicht. |
| nicht … sondern (Kontrast) | Ich nehme nicht den Fisch, sondern das Schnitzel. |
Tip
For the food and shopping nouns here, ein or no article usually becomes kein: Ich trinke Kaffee → Ich trinke keinen Kaffee. Use nicht for a contrast: nicht Tee, sondern Kaffee. Some fixed expressions use nicht even without an article: Ich kann nicht Rad fahren.
