The sentence bracket
The pattern trained here: in a statement, the modal verb takes position 2 and the infinitive closes the sentence. The two verbs form a bracket — the Satzklammer — around the middle of the clause: Ich muss heute zum Arzt gehen. When the context makes it clear, German often drops the infinitive: Ich muss zur Bank.

| First element | Position 2 | Middle | End |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ich | muss | heute zum Arzt | gehen. |
| Sie | sollten | mehr Wasser | trinken. |
| Ich | kann | am Montag leider nicht | kommen. |
Tip
In a statement, whatever comes first — Heute, Am Montag — the modal stays in position 2 and, in the neutral order you write, the infinitive closes the sentence. Yes/no questions start with the modal.
