Leider kann ich nicht — declining
Declining has three moves: soften (Leider…), decline (…kann ich nicht), give a reason (…, weil ich arbeiten muss). Vielleicht beim nächsten Mal keeps the friendship.
Tip
A bare "Nein" sounds abrupt. Leider + a short reason (weil …) is the polite way to decline — and a reason gives your partner something to work with.
