Modal verbs are also often used in the simple past: Ich konnte nicht kommen. Wir mussten früh aufstehen. No umlauts in the past — konnte, not könnte!

Tip
Konnte describes an ability or possibility in the past: Ich konnte nicht kommen. Könnte expresses a hypothetical possibility or a polite request: Ich könnte morgen kommen. Könnten Sie mir helfen?
