Ich war krank — shorter than „bin gewesen“

„Ich bin krank gewesen“ is grammatically fine, and common in speech in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland. But war and hatte are shorter and work everywhere. Train the short forms; they also save you words in the Schreiben task.
